Byron Bay

Byron Bay (50mins drive from Gold Coast Airport) is an area of natural wonderful on the most northern stretch of coast in New South Wales. its beauty lies in its unspoilt beaches, volcanic mountains, lush country side and world heritage listed national parks. Today Bryon Bay is a chic seaside town with glorious beaches, a new age tinge and loads of style.

Byron Bay takes in a cluster of surf beaches to the north and south of Cape Byron, the most easterly point in Australia. The Bay has evolved into the ‘style capital’ of Australia’s east coast, with quality accommodation to suit all pockets, a wide range of after-surf activities including soothing spas, whale watching, adventure sports, fine dining and picturesque cafes, as well as a vibrant art and crafts scene.

Several great surf beaches feature at Byron Bay. Main Beach faces almost due north and has pretty reliable right and left-hand beach breaks.

Clarkes Beach is really the eastern end of Main Beach, but it gets a little extra protection from the sea breeze and is less crowded. The sandy bottom and gentle right-hander make it a brilliant spot for beginners.

The Pass is one of Byron’s iconic breaks, famed for its long, peeling right-handers. In bigger swells the Pass can be challenging, but in general it’s a great location for surfers of all abilities, largely favoured by long-boarders.”The Wreck” at Belongil Beach is named for the remains of the SS Wollongbar, which lost its tie to the old Byron Bay Pier and sank during a cyclone in 1922. When the Wreck is working (swell from north-north east, southerly wind), it produces a powerful, hollow right-hander that breaks on the sandbank ten metres in front of the ship.

Located just west of the Byron Bay lighthouse, Watego’s is beloved of long-boarders and wave-ski paddlers. Facing north, it’s completely protected from the big south swells and almost always has gently breaking waves, the highlight being a lazy right-hand point-break. South of the headland and lighthouse is Tallows Beach- super consistent- always a wave.
