Costa Rica in Central America is a true gem. It’s the only country in the world where the tropical rainforest reaches right down to the coast and gorgeous sandy beaches- so geographically speaking it’s a stunning country to visit. The culture is vibrant and very laid back and travelling around is very safe and enjoyable. There are numerous beach breaks and point breaks all up the Pacific Coast around the Jaco area (1 ½ hrs South from San Jose).
The country and wildlife is unique but typical for Central America. Its not uncommon to see flocks of scarlet McCaw parrots flying past, or see crocodiles sunning themselves on river banks, or whales and fish jumping out of the water!

This is a perfect destination for a road trip with a group of friends, the family, your partner or those who want to learn to surf in the tropics. There is so much to do and see in this beautiful country – the surf is a bonus!

Located 90mins drive south of San Jose, Playa Hermosa and the area of Jaco is surf central for Costa Rica. The 3 storey hotel is located right on the beach with multiple beach breaks steps away. All of the breaks in this area are over black sand, are quite hollow, and lots of fun. There are two main breaks almost right out front; an A-frame and a left hand beach break. There are also dozens of other uncrowded breaks around too with Jaco having some great set ups, as well as further south down toward Quepos.

Playa Hermosa is one of the most consistent areas in Costa Rica – with swells hitting from different directions, and trade winds being generally offshore most of the time. There are many other world class consistent breaks to the north and south breaking all year round. There is no best season for surf as it’s like a magnet for swell – just two distinct seasons with the weather; wet and dry.
The wet season generally runs from May to November and is characterized by tropical showers with variable winds. The rainiest months are September and October with torrential downpours often washing out roads and riverbeds.
The dry season, December to April, brings consistent offshore winds and the coolest weather despite little to no rainfall. Water temps average 80 degrees year round.

Costa Rica is a good bet for surf any time of year. The Southern Pacific Ocean pulses energy toward Costa Rica’s Pacific coast year-round, although south swells are strongest from April thru September.

The northernmost part of Guanacaste from Tamarindo to the Nicaraguan border sticks out like an elbow and is more exposed to winter swells from November to April. This region of Northern Costa Rica also benefits from Nicaragua’s “Lake Effect” offshore winds that can blow all day, every day during the dry season.

The 3 story hotel is located right on the beach with multiple beach breaks steps away. While you are able to be picked up and transferred to Hermosa Beach and just spend your time in this immediate area- its also an idea to pick up a rental car when you arrive in San Jose and drive here. This will enable you to explore the coastline in search of waves, as well as see the amazing tropical rainforest and other attractions nearby.

The hotel has a handful or room categories, all are air-conditioned with tiled floors, private bathroom, double and single beds and kitchens as well.
The nearby town of Jaco is a typical surf town, with great cheap markets, supermarkets, surf shops and bars/restaurants etc.

Hiring a rental car and exploring the coast in search of waves will take you through some quaint surf towns, past gorgeous sandy beaches, beach bars, classic point breaks with waves rolling down the coast an also through some stunning countryside. A must while in Costa Rica is checking out some of the national Parks like the Arenal Cloud Forest. Walking 100ft above the ground through the rainforest canopy on rope bridges with monkeys, toucan’s and other wildlife is amazing!
