The Batu Islands, also known as the Telo Islands, consist of three large main islands and some 48 smaller islets. Located on the equator (at latitude zero degrees), the Telos are situated between Nias and the Mentawai Islands. This places them strategically in the centre of an archipelago stretching along the west coast of Sumatra, an area, which over the last decade, has become one of the great surfing meccas of the world!

The Telo islands have been blessed with a variety of waves suitable for all levels of surfer. Beginners, cruisers, long boarders, stand up paddle boarders and your intermediate-advanced short board surfers.

Crystal clear water, golden beaches and palm trees line the shores with classic reefs, point breaks and beach breaks, which offer waves for ALL standards of surfing ability.

Culminating in the incredible total of 18+ completely different, world class waves. Three of them are located right on the doorstep of the Surfing Village, Pasti, Lobang and Nagadens. The other 12 waves are less than a 20 minute boat trip away.

Pasti is their every day go-to wave, a fast and powerful right hander with 3 tube sections with smaller days being very rippable!

Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 10 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.

The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.

April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction. Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.

Once arriving at The Surfing Village (max 12 surfers) you will see it comprises of only four spacious bungalows, ample and fresh, cooled by the sea breeze and the shade of the coconut jungle. All of the beds have a full view of the barrels of Pasti, Lobang and Nagadens, the lefts of Kiri and the swells that hit Bagas and Mibis. Built with local wood and materials, the bungalows are two floors high. On the first floor is the board room, sheltered hang out area, outside deck and two private bedrooms with King size beds, that will take a couple in each. Equipped with white cotton sheets, mosquito nets, individual fans and bamboo blinds for extra privacy. The second floor is an open loft with a 360 degree view, with one King size bed, and a special mosquito net situated beneath a large ceiling fan. All four bungalows have a private, western style outside toilet with a flush system and a separate bathroom with running tap water as well as a hot and cold water shower.

The Surfing Village headquarters is where the guests spend most of their non surfing time. With eco-friendly construction, using only local materials, it has three floors, plus the ground area. The headquarters is where, early in the morning everyone meets to have their breakfast, check the swell forecast, the tide charts and find out which waves will be better in the days conditions.
The meals are always very substantial with an extensive menu varying between local and western dishes, stretching from pizza to nasi goreng. The restaurant also has an a la carte menu, that can be ordered from any time of the day. For the thirsty, you can’t go past the bar! Icy cold Bintangs, soft drinks and juices are available along with a selection of alcohol.

There are also a few different common areas for socialization, reading, playing games, or just relaxing- including one of the most used and sought after areas – the hammock area. The second floor has a large open space, for your yoga, stretching, relaxing, etc…. The third floor is the TV room. With a spectacular 360 degree view of the waves, it’s where you can relax after lunch, watch a movie or a surf video, all the while keeping one eye on the pumping sets of Pasti and Naga’s. After dinner this is where they have the daily slide shows, screening all the photos of the day from the on site professional photographer. Wi-fi is available all throughout the resort as well.

The resort offers snorkeling gear incl spear guns as well as fishing equipment. Other facilities and activities on offer are; billiards, darts, treks through the local villages, massages, movies or just relax by the pool.
