African Perfection – Jeffrey’s Bay

Includes: airfares (ex Auckland) to Port Elizabeth, return airport transfers, 10 nights’ accommodation at African Perfection Lodge in a beach front suite. Longer or shorter stays available.

Legend has it that the father of South African surfing – John Whitmore, discovered the waves at Jeffrey’s Bay in the late 1950s as he drove up the famous “Garden Route” between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. As he stood in amazement at the side of the road looking, it would have been extremely hard to mistake those corduroy lines perfectly wrapping around a point, giving what could have been a 1.2 km ride!

Jeffrey’s Bay is a picturesque town situated on the coast of the Eastern Cape providence, bracketed by a beautiful range of mountains and its world renowned surfing beaches. This bay is the meeting point where the warm Indian Ocean current mingles with the waters of the cold Atlantic, creating unique conditions for an incredible diversity of marine life. Dolphins are an almost daily sighting.

Located right in front of the legendary section “Supertubes” of J-bay this place is perfect!

Bordered by some of the largest oceans- the Atlantic and Indian.- South Africa has consistent surf breaks all year round. The coast from Port Elizabeth down to Durban, known as the “Garden Route”, is blessed with some amazing world class waves and a lot of the coastline is relatively untouched.

We’ve outlined Jeffery’s Bay for obvious reasons- nothing needs to be said about this long perfect right hand point break. It’s considered one of the greatest waves on the planet and one of those waves that every surfer needs to paddle into during their life.

You’ve either got the option of staying at the J-Bay lodge and exploring the near-by breaks, or spending a few days here then hiring a rental van and travelling the infamous “Garden Route” and surfing your way down the coast to Durban.

Temperatures are moderate all year round along the coast, with rain scattered throughout the year. The summers are warm with a very temperate humidity level and winters are mild and pleasant.

Supertubes is the main wave and directly out front from the lodges. This long (on a good day up to 500m) right hand point breaks fast, has long walls and barrel sections and can hold up to 12ft!

Kitchen Windows is almost an A-frame left/right peak on the main beach that is a great fun wave. Other breaks include; “Magna Tubes” and “Salad bowls”; both fast powerful rights breaking over reef/rock, “Tubes”; a short, perfect hollow wave, “The Point” is everything else you could possibly want from a wave. The waves here tend to be a little smaller than those at Boneyards and Supers. The difference is, that you will have a much longer ride here than at the other two. “Boneyards; a left hand point break and “Albatross” an uncrowded right hander that breaks over a sand bar.

There are almost two dozen named breaks in this area from J-Bay down towards Cape St Francis, mostly point breaks and reefs, but a few beach breaks and river mouth breaks as well!

Each suite has a stylish African décor complete with its own private balcony where a breath taking view of waves, dolphins and exquisite African sunrises can be experienced. Choose from either the Mini suites, Family suites, Seafront suites or the Loft Suites and enjoy; Fantastic ocean views from your private balcony, Direct telephone line, High speed internet connections, Complimentary tea, coffee, Pure cotton bed linen, Satellite TV, Safety deposits boxes, Personal mini-bar, Laundry service, Private entrance to 20 Pepper Street Bistro and more! All rooms serviced by their friendly staff and laundry facilities are offered also.

Featuring a fully equipped modern kitchen, surround sound DVD and entertainment area, this self-catering suite is ideal for honeymooners or for a gathering of family and friends.

African Perfection offers also a great in-house restaurant where they will serve daily continental breakfast. There are a number of bars, shops, restaurants and supermarkets in town nearby where you can stock up.

Apart from the world class surf breaks, South Africa also offers a huge range of unique activities and attractions including; World famous game reserves featuring the “African Big 5” , Dolphin & Whale watching, Great White Shark diving, Deep sea fishing, Horse riding, Quad biking, Kite boarding, Sand boarding and more…

We can also add on side trips to some of Africa’s best wildlife and game reserves. Up there with getting tubed at J-Bay – imagine being on safari, experiencing the thrill of seeing elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes and cheetahs’ etc. on the Serengeti!?

From personal experience, it’s a MUST to visit a few other countries and places once you’re in this part of the world. Take a side trip to see the powerful an amazing Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), or stay at one of the game lodges on the banks of the river in Chobe National Park (Botswana), or if you really want to spoil yourself and get a taste of real Africa, then walk in David Attenborough’s footsteps and visit the Okavango Delta.. This place will blow your mind and leave you speechless.
